Vladimir is the Golden Ring route's historical starting point and one of the oldest Russian cities. It was founded in 1108 as a fortress by Prince Vladimir Monomakh. It's the first stop on the Trans-Siberian railway and during the 12th century served as the capital city. Till the 14th century the city was the administrative, cultural and religious center of the North-Western Russia. In 1719 it became the province center. Between 1858 and 1862 a road from Nizhny Novgorov to Moscow ran through Vladimir. Since 1944 it has been the center of the region. Vladimir stands on the left bank of the Kliazma River, 190 km from Moscow.

Suzdal is a town of around thirteen thousand inhabitants. The first reference to Suzdal was made in the Chronicle in 1024 in connection with the peasant's uprising suppressed by the prince Yaroslav the Wise. According to the archeological excavations the first settlements of Suzdal were organized in the 9th century.
It's home to the St. Euthimius Monastery of Our Saviour and after the decline of its political role became a centre of ecclesiastical power. Suzdal today is a centre of an administrative area of the Vladimir region. This pleasant hilly green town is popular with visitors.
